A big thank you to everyone who joined us for two really productive workshops last week, both of which explored the challenges of the role of Senior Responsible Owner. We worked with two separate organisations, one a central government department and one a charity youth organisation. It was no surprise that the challenges at this level are very similar even if the goals are completely different.
Leading as a Senior Responsible Owner explores the challenges of leading complex change programmes and aiming for what we call ‘lean back engagement’. By this we mean achieving a utopia of maximum impact with minimum input. It’s essential to set your programme up in such a way that you can have the confidence to steer the ship from a reasonable distance.
As ever, we named-checked L. David Marquet and enjoyed again his great video on leadership. If you haven’t already seen it then follow the link below.
It is not surprising to me that empowering the crew of a nuclear submarine requires many of the same core principles as leading a complex change programme costing multiple-millions of any currency.
Granted the stakes may be higher in many respects but, for both of these organisations, the importance of the outcome and the safety of the participants is critical to their success.
Amongst other things we discussed the value of a clear sense of direction, great communication and most importantly an empowering culture that develops competence together with the desired attitudes and behaviours. As David says, great leadership is underpinned by two pillars, clarity of purpose and team competence.
As ever, an engaging experience for all with plenty of food for thought and lively discussions. Thank you again to everyone who came along and contributed.
